The Second Question Nobody Asks
Every relocation guide helps you optimize one commute to one employer. That’s the first question: “Where should I live for my Intel job?”
But the question sitting in the back of your mind — especially after 20,000+ Intel layoffs since 2024 — is the second one: “If this job doesn’t work out, can I stay?”
The answer is yes. Phoenix isn’t a company town. It’s a career cluster. The Chandler/Gilbert/Tempe corridor alone has 41 semiconductor employers. Add Scottsdale and North Phoenix, and you’re looking at 68 companies across every tier of the semiconductor supply chain. Your skills are portable within the metro.
Two Geographic Clusters
The Chandler Corridor (41 employers) — Intel Ocotillo, NXP, Microchip HQ, Applied Materials, and dozens more along the 101/202 interchange. This is the center of gravity.
North Phoenix (TSMC + Amkor Peoria) — TSMC’s $165B campus and Amkor’s $2B packaging facility. A 30-minute drive up the 101 from the Chandler corridor. Even if you need to switch clusters, the other one is commutable.
Anchor Fabs (2)
The foundational employers that anchor the corridor. Massive capital investment, thousands of direct jobs, and the gravitational pull that draws the entire ecosystem.

Where Semiconductor Skills Transfer
If you ever leave semiconductor entirely, Phoenix’s aerospace and defense sector shares enough process engineering overlap that your skills transfer. Honeywell Aerospace, Raytheon Missiles & Defense, Boeing Apache helicopter production, General Dynamics — all have major Phoenix operations. The clean-room discipline, statistical process control, and equipment maintenance skills from fab work translate directly. We don’t map these companies here because the power of this page is in the specificity: 68 semiconductor companies. But the safety net extends further than this list.
Know a semiconductor employer we missed? If you work at a Phoenix-area semiconductor company not listed here, let us know.
Send This to Your Partner
The short version for the person who needs to understand what 68 employers means for your family’s decision.
You’re not betting on one company. If you buy a house in the Chandler corridor, you’re within commuting distance of 41 semiconductor employers — and that’s before counting North Phoenix.
What that means practically:
- Job security is geographic, not corporate. If Intel has another round of layoffs, NXP, Microchip, onsemi, Applied Materials, and dozens of others are hiring within the same commute zone.
- Your skills are portable. Process engineering, equipment maintenance, yield analysis — these skills transfer across employers. You don’t have to retrain.
- If you have industry experience, this map shows your career options too. Not just the big fabs — equipment companies, design houses, staffing agencies, and consulting firms all need people who understand semiconductor operations.
- This isn’t a boom-bust market. $200B+ in capital investment, CHIPS Act funding anchoring the anchor fabs, and 176,000 semiconductor-relevant workers already in the metro. This is infrastructure, not a gold rush.
When you’re deciding whether to buy or rent, look at this map. A family buying a house is making a 5–10 year bet on a geography. This map is the case that the geography holds up.
